Title
Interior of the synagogue, facing the front with view of bimah and torahs enclosed in the Ark, May 2021.
Description
Interior of the synagogue, facing the front with view of bimah and in back are the torahs enclosed in the Ark, May 2021. This area of the synagogue is very important as they hold ritual items that are symbolic for Judaism and worship. The bimah is a pedestal where the torah scrolls are placed when they are read during services. The torahs are enclosed in the Ark, which is usually a cabinet or recession in a wall. Above the ark where the stained-glass window rests, is a light called ner tamid, the Eternal Lamp. This symbolizes the commandment to keep the light burning found in Exodus 27, lines 20-21. When the Ark doors are open, congregants must stand until they are closed.
