West and East Mitten Buttes as well as Merrick Butte.

Even though Dolph Andrus’s Monumental Highway Expedition showed that the automobile could be used to enter Monument Valley, it would be many years before the federal government constructed a highway through Monument Valley. Finally, Andrus’s dream was realized when, in 1970, the government constructed U.S. Route 163. This scenic route cuts through Monument Valley and connects Bluff, Utah, and Kayenta, Arizona, permitting tourists, in a mere one hour and fifteen minute drive, to gaze upon the monuments that Andrus worked so hard to reach.
